Common Questions
Q: What does Swirl do?
A: Swirl helps you scan a wine label with your camera or choose a label photo from your library. The app creates a wine profile with details such as name, winery, vintage, region, grapes, ABV, rating, tasting notes, food pairings, price range, and drinking window when those details can be identified or reasonably estimated.
Q: Why is Swirl asking for camera access?
A: Camera access is needed only so you can scan wine labels inside the app. If you prefer, you can also pick an existing label photo from your photo library.
Q: Why did Swirl say it couldn't identify my wine?
A: Swirl works best with a clear, well-lit photo of the front label. Try filling the on-screen frame with the label, avoiding glare, and making sure the wine name and producer are readable. Photos of menus, receipts, scenery, people, or unclear labels may be rejected.
Q: Are wine ratings and tasting notes official?
A: No. Swirl uses AI to create a helpful wine profile from the visible label and general wine knowledge. Ratings, notes, food pairings, price ranges, and drink-until dates are informational estimates, not professional, medical, legal, or purchasing advice.
Q: How do I save a wine?
A: After a label is identified, review the Wine Profile and tap Save to Cellar. Saved wines appear in the My Wine Cellar tab.
Q: Can I sort or delete saved wines?
A: Yes. In My Wine Cellar, use the sort control to organize saved wines by name, date saved, or rating. You can delete a saved wine from its wine profile or from the cellar card actions.
Q: What is the Wine Guide?
A: The Wine Guide is a built-in learning section with concise notes on wine regions, grapes, tasting basics, and food pairing.
Q: I found a bug. What should I send?
A: Email a short description, your iPhone model, iOS version, Swirl app version, and screenshots if available. If the issue involves identification, describe the label photo conditions rather than sending sensitive personal information.
Privacy and Label Photos
Swirl does not require an account or login. Saved wines are stored on your device in the app's local Cellar.
When you choose to identify a label, the selected label image is processed through Swirl's wine identification service. The app shows a consent sheet before the first identification. Read the Privacy Policy for more details.
