Privacy Policy
This Privacy Policy explains how Swirl handles your information when you scan wine labels, create AI-generated wine profiles, save bottles to your Cellar, use the Wine Guide, or contact support.
Effective Date
5 June 2026
Summary
Swirl is designed to work without an account, login, or user profile. Your saved Cellar data is stored on your device.
When you choose to identify a wine, Swirl sends the selected label photo to Google Gemini so it can read the label and return a wine profile. The app asks for consent before the first AI identification.
Information Swirl Handles
Swirl may handle the following information:
- Wine label photos you capture with the camera or choose from your photo library for identification
- AI-generated wine profile details, such as wine name, winery, vintage, country, region, type, grapes, alcohol content, rating, confidence, tasting notes, food pairings, price range, and drink-until year
- Saved Cellar records, including the saved wine profile, label image, scan date, and save date
- App preferences, such as your Cellar sort option and whether AI identification consent has been recorded
- Support emails you choose to send, including your email address and anything you include in the message
- Crash logs, diagnostics, and basic app usage information provided through Apple services if you have enabled sharing with Apple and developers
Swirl does not require you to provide your name, phone number, account credentials, or payment details inside the app.
Camera and Photo Library
Swirl asks for camera access so you can scan wine labels in the app. You can also choose an existing image from your photo library.
The app uses the selected image only for the wine-label workflow. Swirl does not browse your photo library, import unrelated photos, or access camera images until you choose to capture or select a label photo.
AI Wine Identification
Swirl uses Google Gemini to identify wine labels. When you tap Allow on the consent sheet and identify a label, the selected label image is sent to Google's Gemini API with instructions to read the label and return structured wine information.
The AI response is used to create the Wine Profile shown in the app. If you save the profile, it is added to your local Cellar. If you do not save it, the profile is discarded when you close it.
Label photos sent for identification are processed by Google according to Google's applicable privacy and data processing terms. Swirl does not use label photos for advertising, user profiling, or resale.
Local Cellar Storage
Saved wine profiles are stored locally on your device using Apple's local app storage technology. This includes the label image and wine details shown in your Cellar.
You can delete saved wines from the app. You can also remove local app data by deleting Swirl from your device, subject to normal iOS backup and restore behavior.
